Kinetics craft Shaargk, on the Boulder Rez.
Boulder Kinetic Sculpture Challenge - Saturday, May 05, 2007 Every spring across America, from Baltimore, Maryland to Ventura, California, Kineticists create a wide variety of kinetic sculptures that areamphibious and human powered works of art, custom built for the kinetics race. This includes the annual Boulder Kinetic Sculpture Challengeheld at the Boulder reservoir for the last 28 years. Micro Motion employees have been lucky enough to participate in the last 14 events. This year, Micro Motion sponsored two of the 47 teamsthat competed in the challenge. One team, named “Shaargk” for this year’s event, has been competing in the challenge with Micro Motionsupport since 1996. “Shaargk” was the first place overall winner of the competition. It was also the fourth year in a row that the Micro Motionteam cross-ed the finish line in first place. The second team submitted by Micro Motion was a commanding 12-foot tricycle named “NothingRides Like a Deer” competed in Kinetics for the third time this year. The Kinetics challenge is much more than just the race. Teams must reinvent themselves each year with new sculptures and costumes tosupport the year’s theme. Prizes are awarded in a variety of categories including best sculpture, costume, team style, and engineering. The continued success of Micro Motion at the Kinetic Sculpture Challenge can be attributed to the hard work of the team members whoseefforts always make for a fun and rewarding event.

Kinetic Sculpture Float Test with the Shaargk Sculpture

Before the float test, the team members discuss what part they will play when piloting the craft. The mary goal of the float test is to determine if the craft is in good working order. During the post parade float test, the most expensive component on the craft failed. Eugene worked for many hours both Saturday and Sunday removing the damaged component, trouble shooting and researching replacement options.

The making of the Shaargk Kinetic Sculpture.

Kiara and Tim Mosher hand painted our SHAARGK Battle Flag,
the flag was created after our team logo that Kiara designed for us.

The entire sculpture team has done a truly amazing job creating our wonderful shark. Tim Mosher and Jeremy Uhlenbrock made the armature one of the most successful ever. The mouth opens and the tail wags as conceived during the design. I can’t fully express my gratitude for all of the hours spent kneeling down on the ground and contorting our bodies around the cold aluminum kinetics craft. This is the first time I can truly say our sculpture and costumes were completed with amazing stamina and skill from the entire team.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to create a tail fin for a seventeen foot long Shaargk? How about creating a mouthful of pointy pearly whites? Our resident seamstress Debbie Revis can tell you it is a lot of hard work cutting and sewing. This year Debbie out did herself and produced a phenomenal mouthful of sharks teeth. What an amazing spectacle to look at the crown pearls and know that the whole team came together to create them with Debbie’s leadership.

A shark isn’t very scary without teeth; here is a photo of Debbie finishing stuffing one of the many beautiful teeth of our Shaargk sculpture.

Creating the Shaargk Sculpture

The Making Shaargk

Shaargk Wins The Kinetics RaceTeam Shaargk Wins the Kinetics Race Team photo at the finsh line!

Each Kinetics craft crew member is an athlete. We recruit runners and cyclists. This year’s team had three pilots to peddle over the water and three runners to push the craft over land. The team members were selected based on their dedication and willingness to train all year long. Each of the cyclist logs thousands of miles each year. The pit crew that runs with the Kinetics craft is made up of three different types of runners. First, we have a marathon runner to keep a strong pace that the other runners have to keep up with. The second runner is tall to push the Kinetics Craft off the beach with out going under the water. The third runner is all about strength when the craft gets stuck someone needs to pull it out. Creating a team of with this diverse group of people is a winning formula with a tremendous amount of power and experience.
